For years now we at Entry Level Websites & csb internet have been preaching about the importance of a simple navigation system for your website, catchy titles and clearly laid out content.
Here's an interesting article from the BBC Working Lunch team which highlights the main points (click on the image)
your navigation is best viewed along the top or vertically on the left
one second in time
you have only one second to grab the visitors attention
pictures and picture sizes
try to avoid arty farty pictures, make them interesting
headline writing
great headlines will grab attention too
content writing
keep the content punchy and interesting
OK, so now you've seen the video why havent i got any navigation down the left? Well, that's quite simple really, there isn't that much on the site after all teh first thing you will see is the big advert at the top (at the time of writing a four page website for £249), with the next row of info beneath the navigation tabs.
"yeah, but why aren't the tabs at the top then?"
Well, because when you scroll down past the image, the tabs would be lost back up the top and every time someone wanted to go to a different place they would be scrolling up and down.
